Chapter 17 (Liam)
Inside Master Perrenâs meticulous quarters, Liam was surprised to see how little space the man actually had for himself. The room was sparse. One window with double shutters bespoke luxury, but the plain bed, plain desk, plain bookshelf with a small grouping of books, and the desk spoke of simplicity only. There was no place even for a fire, even though the outer wall was of stone. Perren noticed the heap of blankets and quilts at the end of Master Perrenâs bed, and decided that the man probably needed them, even against the inner wall of the mews.
Near the window, a wide double perch stood, and on it, a tiny sparrow hawk, hooded, and tied to the perch with enough room for movement but not flight. The birdâs right wing was covered in a tightly wrapped bundle and tied to its body with a wide strip of cloth. As they approached, the birds neck feathers stood up high, and it shrieked.
âItâs all right now, itâs all right,â said Master Perren, soothingly, âjust me and a young friend you might like.â
The sparrow hawk shrieked again, and stood tense on the perch.
Master Perren picked up a pair of long sleeved heavy gloves from the desk, with dexterous fabric at the fingertips. He approached the bird slowly, still speaking to it.
Liam stayed on the opposite side of the room, not wanting to frighten the bird. He watched as Master Perren expertly untied the hood in a deft movement.
âThere, there, Iâm just here to give you a second breakfast now, with some help from Liam here,â said Master Perren.
The sparrow hawkâs mantle went down as it eyed Master Perren, but as it cocked its head at Liam it gave a small shriek and all of its feathers went up. It side stepped on its perch away from both of them and towards the window.
âTalk to him now, and show him that wing, slowly to the side, not up and wide,â said Master Perren.
Liam stood stunned for a moment and then realized Perren might be onto something. Besides, he really wanted to pass this test. âItâs all right, friend,â said Liam, âsee, I have my own troubles.â He slowly spread his wing out pointing it towards the floor, and held out his other arm too.
The sparrow hawk stopped moving away, and cocked its head at him, eyeing him curiously. Then the bird took a step towards him, and then another step until it stood on the edge of its perch closest to the center of the room. Then it chirruped in its throat, like a quiet question.
âNo, I canât fly right now either, but I used to be able to,â said Liam quietly but sadly.
The bird leaned towards him, and Master Perren untied the leash from the perch, and held out one of his gloved hands. The sparrow hawk stepped onto his gloved forearm and sunk its claws in delicately. Then it nodded its head towards Liam. âThatâs right, Iâll take you to him,â said Master Perren.
